Sony Vaio Laptop - overheating!!?

My Sony Vaio Laptop has, over the past few days, become burning hot. Too hot to even touch & a weird crackling noise is coming from the speakers within 20 mins of it being switcher on. I'm not great with laptops, so the heat and sound is coming from the right hand corner... possibly where the hard drive is? Can anyone help me to resolve this!?
